Healthy School Lunch Options

JOPLIN, MO.----  Dietitians at Freeman Health System are reminding parents what foods should be going into their lunch bags. The clinical nutrition manager says children should have more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Children should also include low-fat dairy products like cheese and yogurt, while including less sodium and fat.

"There's so much processed food out there and the rates of obesity are really on the rise with children. So making sure that you give them a good start and it also teaches them what healthy foods are. When you're putting the healthy stuff in there, then they're going to learn to eat healthy and they're going to have a healthier diet overall when they become an adult," said Andrea McGrew, Clinical Nutrition Manager

According to, childhood obesity rates have tripled over the last three decades, and nearly one in three children are obese.
