Wyandotte, Ok. - The Wyandotte School District cancels classes for the rest of the week due to a fire destroying most of its bus fleet.
Superintendent Troy Gray tells us the blaze broke out around 10:45 pm Wednesday at the district's maintenance facility, otherwise known as the bus barn.
At least 10 buses out of the district's 15 were destroyed.
Crews from Seneca, Fairland, Wyandotte and Quapaw all assisted at the scene.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
As a rural district, approximately 80% of students are bused to school, so administrators will use Thursday and Friday to figure out insurance as well as a plan of action to getting students back to classes.
"Strong community strong schoool so we'll bounce back and if we need to go to our patrons I know they'll step up," Gray says.
School is closed Monday for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, and district leaders hope to return by Tuesday. With school out, the Wyandotte Nation Police say the Wyandotte Nation Childcare Program will be open 7:15am - 5:45pm and the preschool will be closed.
