JOPLIN, MO.--- Joplin crime rises in the month of March. Increases in burglary and vandalism add up to about two percent jump for the month as compared to March 2013.

That contributes to the increase Joplin police had already been seeing this year - making it a 13 percent increase year to date.

Joplin Police Chief Jason Burns points out that in burglaries, 41 percent of the time doors were left unlocked. It's a much higher rate than in past months.

He added, "Compared to an average of 16%. That's obviously opening the door for these criminals to come in their residence and things of that nature.  These are preventable issues."

Burns also points out that the department will start a weekly crime analysis next month - a move he hopes will help prevent future crimes.
