District officials say they have been losing substantial state funding by not offering the program. The state gives school districts almost $4,000 per student. So, USD 250 was not getting funding for the 42 students attending virtual programs outside of the area.
"When we enroll a student before the September 20th count date, Greenbush will bill us $2,000 for their services, but then we are able to keep that other money," said Dr. Brian Biermann, USD 250 Assistant Superintendent.
The Kansas State Department of Education has approved Pittsburg's virtual school program, meaning the expansion is now official.
