JOPLIN, MO.--- A popular Joplin street will be closed for the next several months. 26th Street in Joplin from Maiden Lane to Schifferdecker will be closed to traffic. The city will close the street on Tuesday to begin widening the road.

This is part of a 10 year sales tax improvement project that voters approved back in 2004. It will make the road less congested and allow more traffic. There will be three lanes, along with sidewalks for bikes and pedestrians.

"If you're just passing through the area, our advice would be to use 32nd Street or 20th Street. If you live in the area, just proceed with caution," said David Hunter, Transportation Engineer.

The project is expected to be completed by Christmas of this year.
