Artificial sweeteners in the drink might fulfill a person's sweet tooth without the calories, but experts say the fake sugar confuses the body, making it hard to metabolize. Health professionals say the soda isn't great, in general.
"Soda doesn't really have that many health benefits. If you're doing regular soda, there's a lot of sugar in there. There's no vitamins, no nutrients, nothing that really nourishes the body. The same with diet soda," said Brittany Carpenter, Freeman Health System Nutritionist.
Experts say diet soda drinkers often gain weight because the sweet taste can cause a drop in blood sugar. This can actually trigger hunger and cause you to have a sweet tooth. Researchers also say diet sodas are also linked to increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
