CARTHAGE, MO.--- A local police department is using social media to raise awareness about shoplifting. Carthage police are now posting mugshots of suspects who have been arrested and charged on Facebook. The police chief says shoplifting numbers have grown dramatically since 2011, so prevention is a top priority. He adds the department is also using more traditional prevention techniques.

"One was clearly more patrol of the areas where shoplifting occur, so we're doing that. The other was to increase the fines and bonds for shoplifting, so we've done that," said Greg Dagnan, Carthage Police Chief.

In 2011, Carthage logged 44 reports of shoplifting, a number that grew to 148 last year.
