WEBB CITY, MO.--- Carterville Elementary School is getting a new safe room. This week, FEMA released the project to move forward into the construction phase. In the next couple weeks, the school will be looking for bids to build the new addition. As soon as the bids are open up, construction will take place immediately. Carterville will be one of the larger safe rooms. It will be 12,000 square feet and accommodate 1,200 people.

"It's actually going to be great. Our kids are going to have a safe place to go in a tornado, but we're also going to several thousand community members that are going to have a good secure safe place to go if there's ever a storm in the area," said Kevin Cooper, business operations.

The Carterville safe room is expected to be complete by March 2015.
