JOPLIN, MO.--- If you ever plan to visit China, you may want to take some local translators with you. Students at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School in Joplin are getting recognized for their Chinese language skills. Fei Gao is their teacher and her class recently competed in a regional competition in Kansas City. They ranked first place in the state in their Chinese language skills. Gao says it makes her proud to see her students picking up such a challenging language.

"Most rewarding thing is to hear them speak in front of the judges at the Kansas City speech contest," said Fei Gao, Chinese Language Teacher.

In English, there are 26 characters in the alphabet. In Chinese, there are more than 10,000.
