Joplin, Missouri -
JOPLIN, MO.--- In January, Kevin Kimmel pulled into a truck stop in Virginia and spotted a van with its windows taped up and men entering it. He then saw a young blonde girl peek out in distress. He called authorities and the girl had been missing for a couple of weeks, and was the victim of human trafficking. Kevin's simple phone call saved her life. He says the girl called him a few days later to thank him.
"She told me I was her guardian angel. Well, I don't know about that. But I said, 'you can do something for me. You can be my hero, and try to get this thing put behind you, and go on and have a happy and productive life,'" said Kevin Kimmel, Hero.
Kevin was given the Harriet Tubman Award from the Truckers Against Trafficking Group, and also a Highway Angel Award at a ceremony today at Con-Way Truckload in Joplin.
