JOPLIN, MO.--- Several area seniors are recognized by President Obama for their years of volunteering. Chuck and Gay Whorlow received the President's Volunteer Service Award. In order to receive the award, they have to give 500 hours a year to volunteering.

The Whorlow's went above and beyond by donating more than 1,100 hours a year. A ceremony was held in Joplin at the Independent Living Center. Thirteen different volunteers received the award and they say it's important to give back.

"We're honored, we received the award for doing something we enjoy doing," says Chuck Whorlow, Volunteer.

If you're a senior and would like to volunteer in the area, you can call the Independent Living Center at 417-659-8086.
