Atkinson Municipal Airport Runway Improvement Project

PITTSBURG, KS.--- Atkinson Municipal Airport in Pittsburg could be getting some changes in the near future. The goal is to continue providing the level of service their current customers have come to expect. While there are many aspects of the airport that need an upgrade, the focus is on the main runway, which could help attract more jets and more money to the city.
"One of the things that we are looking at is the extension of the runway, our main run way by 600 feet," said Bill Beasley, Pittsburg Public Works Director.
The runway currently is too short for jets coming to the airport.
"We have larger jets now from what we originally put that runway in. They need the longer runway area in order to safely take off," said Beasley.
The city will submit a five year improvement plan to the Federal Aviation Administration to help fund the $3 million project.
"We have eight business jets that are housed out there. The extra 600 feet will give them additional safety factor when coming and going," said Beasley.
The new runway would allow more traffic and might benefit the city.
"We can actually land larger aircraft out there. Maybe give them the opportunity to buy fuel from us and increase our sales," said Beasley.
Pittsburg Public Works Director Bill Beasley says the main goal is to accommodate the customers the airport already has.
"That activity is important to us to maintain their presence at the airport, but also to make it safely as possible for them to come and go," said Beasley.
Beasley says the improvement project will also increase the turn around lane at the end of the main runway, as well improving maintenance for the airport's second runway. The plan is still pending, the FAA will review the city's plan and determine if there is enough funds to provide for the project.
