JOPLIN, MO.--- Today, company representatives presented a $2,000 check to the Alliance of Southwest Missouri. The money will be used to purchase more drug drop off boxes. The Prescription Drug Take Back Program provides a safe and effective method for disposing of medications. The boxes help individuals from flushing their medicine and contaminating the water.

"Used to, we do events where we would have a day where people could bring in and drop them off. These make that permanent. So people can bring them any time so they aren't holding on to medications for a long period of time," said Aaron Gooch, Joplin Police Officer.

"It's expensive okay to keep them going, but it's also very  much worth the expense," said Kevin Theilen, Alliance of SWMO.

Since January 2012, more than 2,000 pounds of prescription drugs have been collected in Joplin.
