Area National Park Receives 2014 America's Best Idea Grant
DIAMOND, MO.--- The National Park Foundation has given the monument with the 2014 America's Best Idea Grant. This $19, 900 award will help the park continue to grow its partnership with the community. The George Washington Carver Monument is using the funds to reach out to and engage local youth, particularly Native Americans. A 2013 survey showed kids and teens are more focused on technology than national parks. Some don't even know the park exists in Diamond.
"We are trying to change that trend. National parks have so much to offer, and this national park has so much to offer. If we can get them here and they can experience places, then we believe we'll make a change," said Lana Henry, Management Assistant.
The first step is hiring a liaison to help engage youth in the Native American communities. The national park will then hire a different person to reach out to other demographics, each year after that.
