Optimize Your Workout Routine

JOPLIN, MO-- As spring starts to dominate the forecast, more and more people are thinking about getting out and getting active. But figuring out how often AND how much time to spend on exercise can be a tough call.

"The research is showing that you want to work toward 45 minutes and even 60 minutes most days a week. The statistics show that five days a week of 45 minutes to 60 minutes of aerobic activity, that really shows that level of lasting heart and physical fitness health." And Freeman Director of Rehabilitation Services and Sports Medicine Mick Ward says those health benefits are wide ranging. "You start to see improved vascular performance, better vascular vessel health. The heart tends to be pumping more efficiently. We see a lower blood pressure or a lower pulse rate. Despite the allergies in the area at times, the lungs can respond pretty quickly as well."

Ward adds it's important to check with your doctor before beginning a new workout routine... and that it's okay to start gradually. "10 -15 minutes of activity, every other day is okay as well. It just means you need to be doing something on a consistent basis and to be heart healthy really for 4 - 5 days a week is really what you want to do to reach that level of improved health and fitness and longevity."
